An April storm has started to bring snow into the Sierra, forcing drivers to take their time on the roadways.

The flurries along I-80 near Donner Summit and Kingvale started around 7 p.m. Wednesday, and conditions have been getting worse. Caltrans snowplows were seen through the evening and nighttime driving across the area.

Traffic along I-80 was not too bad, but Chris Sharp, a chain control inspector for Caltrans, said everyone needs to play it safe by paying attention and driving slow.

Sharp said his job is to turn drivers around if he sees them traveling without chains when they are required unless those drivers are in vehicles that have four-wheel drive.

"Make sure you have chains,” Sharp said.

The rules of the road were also important to Jennifer Cortijo, a truck driver headed to Colorado.

"Safety is number one. Number one. It doesn't matter if the load is later. Rather it be late than not there at all,” Cortijo said. "If it's too bad, pull over always. If it's ice, pull over, definitely."

On top of making sure they stay safe, many people said they were excited for this latest wave of winter weather – even though it is mid-April. At the Boreal Mountain Ski Resort, Poe Minton and her two sons slid down the slopes Wednesday, hoping for even more snowfall on Thursday.

“We kind of planned this trip around the snow, and if it's going to snow more tomorrow, we're going to be right back out there,” Minton said.

More snow is also expected over the coming holiday weekend. That is why the California Highway Patrol issued a reminder to everyone to winterize their cars, so you should check to make sure your tires, wiper blades, lights and batteries are all working properly before you hit the road.
