For the 2022 model year, Volvo offers some meaningful changes to car buyers, starting with the installation of new mild hybrid systems in its S60 and S90 sedans, V90 off-road wagons and XC60 SUVs. In addition, the Volvo model series welcomes the new all-electric C40 Recharge compact crossover, and bids farewell to all non-off-road versions of the V60 and V90 luxury station wagons.

In terms of technology, several 2022 Volvo models receive a new, more connected infotainment kit based on Android-with built-in apps, navigation and digital assistants-to replace Volvo's previous internal Sensus system. But strangely, Volvo's familiar driving mode selector dial and built-in rearview mirror compass have disappeared from the entire product line.

By 2022, all Volvo cars and SUVs will undergo at least minor revisions. The following are updates for each model.

The most important news of the 2022 Volvo series is the addition of the all-electric C40 Recharge compact SUV. This fast-back variant of XC40 Recharge draws energy from a 78 kWh battery that drives dual electric motors on the front and rear axles to achieve all-wheel drive (AWD) functionality. Its stylish and dynamic exterior design heralds its 402 horsepower performance. The C40 matches the XC40's 208-mile all-electric range.

Inside, a leather-free cabin reflects Volvo's commitment to sustainable development. C40 Recharge has a fully equipped interior and Volvo's latest Android-based infotainment system. In general, this new all-electric SUV has novel styles, but the cargo space is slightly insufficient.

Three years after a complete redesign, the compact S60 sedan replaced its long-existing T5 engine with a more efficient B5 mild hybrid system equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. The overall fuel economy of this 48-volt hybrid system is improved to 26 miles per gallon (from 23 mpg). The dual-charge T6 engine will no longer be provided in 2022, but the top-level dual-charge T8 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) power system of the S60 Recharge model will be used last year.

In addition to engineering updates, the S60 also received some new exterior paint and wheel design options. The Momentum trim level no longer provides standard front fog lights. R-Design and Inscription trims and S60 Recharge models provide standard wireless charging for mobile devices.

For the 2021 model year, Volvo's large S90 sedan has undergone an appearance change, but in 2021, major changes have taken place under the hood. Therefore, the S90 replaced its T6 turbocharged and supercharged power system with a new dual-charged B6 mild hybrid propulsion system. In terms of technology, the cabin is equipped with an Android-based infotainment kit.

By 2022, standard headlight washer nozzles are no longer standard equipment and are now part of the climate package. Enhanced air filtration is no longer available as a standalone option and is now part of the premium package.

In 2022, Volvo will launch the V60 model series; in addition to the rugged AWD Cross Country model and the Recharge PHEV version, the automaker discontinued all variants of the luxury station wagon. This means that Volvo no longer offers Momentum, R-Design or Inscription trim levels with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder T5 powertrain.

The remaining two V60 models have minor changes. V60 Cross Country accepts wireless device charging, while V60 Recharge models lose the standard heated windshield wiper blades.

The specially ordered V90 luxury station wagon will be discontinued in 2022, making the V90 Cross Country the only product in this model series. The slightly elevated off-road wagon has the same modification as the S90 luxury sedan. This means that the new dual-charge B6 mild hybrid system replaces the long-existing T6 engine.

Internally, a new Android-based infotainment kit replaces the previous internal Sensus system. Headlight washer nozzles range from standard equipment to climate packs, and enhanced air filtration is no longer an independent option. Instead, it now resides in the advanced equipment package.

Volvo's ultra-compact XC40 SUV has undergone minor changes in 2022, starting with the basic Momentum decoration and no longer providing front fog lights. R-Design and Inscription decoration accept standard wireless device charging, but all decorations have lost the standard rear door electric child lock as standard equipment.

The all-electric XC40 Recharge model has also received some meaningful improvements. Only one year after its launch, this zero-emission SUV received a 360-degree panoramic parking camera system and a 12-volt socket in the cargo area as standard equipment. It also received a new Android infotainment system.

In 2022, Volvo's XC60 compact SUV will replace its T5 and T6 engines with B5 and B6 2.0-liter 4-cylinder mild hybrid systems, respectively. Two 48-volt hybrid systems improve efficiency, but still provide powerful turbocharged (B5) or dual-charged (B6) performance.

Aesthetically, the XC60 has adjusted its appearance through improved bumpers, hidden exhaust pipes and new wheel designs. Inside, there is a new Android infotainment system and standard wireless device charging. Moving forward, the XC60 is equipped with a new standard sports activated tailgate version.

Like other Volvo models, the enhanced air filter and headlight washer nozzles have changed from stand-alone equipment to optional accessories.

Except for the newly hidden exhaust pipes, the appearance of Volvo's XC90 flagship SUV in 2022 remains unchanged. Inside, the basic Momentum trim gets the standard navigation, while the top Inscription trim no longer provides perforated interiors in the second row. Like other Volvo models, the enhanced air filtration system-formerly a separate option-is now included in the premium package. The headlight washer nozzle (previously standard) is bundled in the optional climate package.
