Tesla has a simple requirement, which is to have a damn laser beam on the hood of the car. Now, this requirement is one step closer to being achieved, because Musk’s electric car company has obtained a patent for using a laser beam to clean the windshield.

As Electrek discovered, Tesla successfully obtained the patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office last week. The title describes this technology as "pulsed laser cleaning of debris accumulated on glass in vehicles and photovoltaic modules, which means that it is not only good for windows, but also good for Tesla's solar charging panels.

The related illustration shows the beam of light emanating from two rearward points on the hood, where the wiper fluid nozzles are usually located, slanted toward the windshield. The patent continues to describe the system as including "a beam optical assembly configured to emit a laser beam to illuminate an area on a glass article installed in a vehicle", a debris detection circuit, and a shard detection circuit calibrated to limit the laser from exceeding the glass. Thickness, and "to reduce the risk of damage to different vehicle components under the glass area."

Presumably, they also want to limit damage to the eyes of occupants.

In-depth study of the patent statement, we found that the system includes at least one camera (but can also include a dash cam rear view camera or surround view camera) to detect windshield dirt, transparent resistive coating on the windshield, as well as guidance, A device that focuses and emits a laser beam.

Or, you know, you can continue to use a piece of rubber attached to the electric arm.

It should be noted that just because Tesla has a patent does not mean it will use it. The company also has a patent for electromagnetic wipers. The system will involve an electromagnetic block that moves through a magnetic rod embedded around the windshield, dragging a single blade across the entire area of the windshield, like a giant squeegee.

As far as Tesla is concerned, the wind resistance generated by the mechanical parts of traditional wipers will reduce the vehicle's mileage. Electromagnetic wipers look at least more realistic than laser beams, but any kind of system will significantly increase the cost and complexity of the car.
