Tesla's crazy laser windshield wiper patent was officially granted by the US Patent Office this week. The US Patent Office filed the application in May 2019, granting Tesla exclusive rights to the invention.
Tesla has put forward many ideas about windshield wipers in the past. In fact, in February, the company received a patent approval for Roadster's new wiper design, which will use electromagnetic linear actuators to remove moisture from the windshield. It basically moves from one side of the windshield to the other while using a wiper for one movement.

In addition, Tesla also considered the idea of no wipers on the windshield. Cybertruck did not have wipers when it was unveiled in November 2019, which implies that Tesla either did not come to a conclusion about the correct design, or did not have the idea of wipers at all. Since the latter option is unlikely, perhaps Tesla has finally found the missing link between Cybertruck and the new patent.
Now, Tesla's patent for "Pulse Laser Cleaning of Debris on Vehicles and Photovoltaic Module Glass Products" filed on May 10, 2019 has been authorized by the U.S. Patent Office. The patent authorization was originally discovered by Electrek.
Tesla outlines the patent in its documents:
"A cleaning system for a vehicle includes a beam optical assembly that emits a laser beam to irradiate an area on a vehicle glass product, a debris detection circuit that detects debris accumulated on the area, and a control circuit. The control circuit is based on Detection of debris accumulated on the glass product area to calibrate a set of parameters associated with the laser beam emitted from the beam optics assembly, and control the exposure level of the laser beam on the accumulated debris based on the calibration of the accumulated debris A set of parameters related to the laser beam, where the exposure level is controlled based on the pulsed laser beam at a calibrated rate that limits the penetration of the laser beam to a depth less than the thickness of the glass article and removes debris. Use the laser beam on the glass article Accumulate in the area."
We know that Tesla has some very crazy ideas. CEO Elon Musk has said that he hopes that the Roadster will use SpaceX air-conditioned propulsion to hover, and Cybertruck can install solar panels on its trunk to increase the range.
