This department currently uses standards set forth by the Secretary of the Louisiana State Department of Public Safety and Corrections under Louisiana Administrative Code title 55 sec 8.13. You can download a copy of the code from Louisiana Division of Administration website.

All items to be inspected are required and must operate correctly.  This equipment may not present a safety hazard.

The inspection requirements listed below are for passenger automobiles, non-commercial trailers and motorcycles. Commercial vehicles are subject to additional inspection standards.

Every vehicle (except motorcycles) must be driven to conduct a brake test and check internal safety components.

All vehicles with tinted windows will be checked with an approved tint meter to measure the percentage of light transmission. In addition, all glass will be checked to ensure proper safe operation. Cracks in excess of 8" anywhere on the windshield will not be allowed.

If your sticker is damaged or removed due to replacing a windshield, it is void and you will have to pay for a new inspection, even if there is time left before the sticker on the original windshield expires.

In order to avoid paying the maximum late fee, we highly suggest taking a picture (front and back) of your inspection sticker before the windshield is replaced or keeping the remnants of the tag after it is removed. If you weren't able to do this, you may contact us to request a vehicle inspection record.

Note: Inspection stickers are designed to disintegrate when removed and, therefore, cannot be transferred to another vehicle or windshield.

Tinted windows will be inspected with a tint meter. Only smoke tint shall be allowed. Tint cannot be mirror (reflective), red or amber. Sunscreen may only have a maximum light reflectance of 20%.

Sunscreen regulations do not apply to windows behind the driver of trucks, SUV’s, buses, trailers, motor homes, multi-purpose passenger vehicles and all windows of vehicles used for law enforcement purposes.

Tint exemptions are approved and issued by the Louisiana State Police. All requirements and documents needed to apply for an exemption can be found at the Louisiana State Police website at http://www.lsp.org/cved.html#Tint.

Medical Exemption: Valid medical needs for added protection from the sun, allergies, and/or other sun related medical reasons verifiable by the World Health Organization International Classification of Disease ICD-9-CM under Louisiana R.S. 32:361.2 may obtain a window tint medical exemption affidavit from the Louisiana State Police.

Security Exemption: Private investigators, bail enforcement agents, railroad police officers, Louisiana peace officers P.O.S.T. certified and sworn, and elected or appointed public officials may be eligible for a security exemption affidavit from the Louisiana State Police at http://www.lsp.org/cved.html#Tint.

Individuals eligible to apply for a security exemption from the provisions of RS 32:361.3 and LAC 55:813 must provide a copy of their current credentials and Louisiana Law Enforcement personnel must provide a copy of their peace officer P.O.S.T. certification and current police commission identification.

All required lamps must illuminate. Rear lamps must not be taped or have a cracked lens exposing white light. Lenses must be securely fastened.

Auxiliary lighting equipment must not be placed on, in or in front of any lamp nor shall auxiliary lighting interfere with the necessary visibility width of any lamp.
